IDEAS: Hitman Reborn! Game Slides

So if you take a lil’ scroll down the blog you’ll stumble upon an article I wrote about my ideas for a game based on the Katekyo Hitman Reborn series. While the manga/anime certainly has spawned it’s own game entries, I based mine heavily on the story rather than combat as the others all seem to be. Anyway, alongside my previous Animal Crossing and Nintendo NX slides, here are the ones I had been working on for this game that i’ve also recently updated. Check it! 🙂

IDEA: Hitman Reborn Action/Adventure Game

For those who don’t know about Hitman Reborn (Katekyo Hitman Reborn). It’s a Shonen Jump manga/anime about a teenage boy reluctantly destined to become a mafia boss. He soon learns he as well as his friends and others are capable of crazy feats of strength and abilities that are based on energy from within that takes the form of various flames. I certainly recommend it to any newcomers as the anime is an easy way to learn about and grow attached to the series.

I have recently had my game idea juices flowing forth with ideas for a good game for the series. It already has a few japan-only titles as well as some characters making it into the japan-only crossover title Jump Ultimate Stars. From what I understand these are mostly combat only games but my ideas center around an action adventure title. It would also have light RPG elements sitting it alongside its main inspiration Kingdom Hearts of which you will notice I have been heavily influenced by.

The game would focus on roaming the fictional town of Namimori as each of the seven main characters from the show. The story would follow the manga’s main plot with extra missions based on tasks fulfilled in smaller parts and filler from the show. As you progress you soon gain the ability to travel to and from the future expanding the games layout further.

The game would play much like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts where you roam around a large area in which enemies may randomly appear. You can level your characters up and gain abilities by defeating enemies, beating story missions and bosses as well as completing extra side missions and stories too. I couldn’t decide on whether to introduce a party system or simply have you play as one character at a time.

The battle system would be hack and slash based, much like Kingdom Hearts where you can also dish out optional attacks in the form of specials (instead of magic from KH). A big element of the gameplay would also be the ability to use formes much like the drives from KH. Certain characters like Tsuna and Lambo would be able to access these easily to match their reliance on them in the show. Tsuna of course utilizing his Dying Will modes and Lambo accessing his 15 and 25 Year Old forms. Characters like Hibari and Chrome however would have formes introduced to their repertoire much later in the game as they already bear powerful abilities. Formes also mirror Drives from KH by having a numbered gauge which can be levelled up to allow characters to use formes or finisher attacks more powerful or more often.

Finisher attacks are the cherry on the cake, once unlocked characters can assign one to their finisher button. Once used it will consume a set amount of the Deathperation Gauges and your character can unleash a powerful attack such as Tsuna’s X-Burner or Ryohei’s Maximum Cannon. To utilize the mid-range specials, you would have to use a final bar that represents Flame Volts. They could be set to certain buttons or accessed using the in-play mini menu (much like KH again).

One big focus I had during brainstorming was the use of Summons. As a way of using the vast array of unique secondary characters from the show, players can use their Deathperation Gauge to summon characters of varying rank. Lower rank summons would aid in direct combat, mid rank would also boost your stats and high rank would perform powerful complicated attacks. Early characters like Reborn for example would be low rank, but later allies such as Xanxus would be high rank. Once again however, perhaps these people could receive deeper inclusion using a party system. I liked the idea however of focusing on the main cast, and giving the secondary cast unique moments for players to earn. They would also be in the story mode anyway as NPC’s and enemies.

Final notes from my ideas include details on the game modes. Obviously there is story mode that would encompass the entire manga. I feel modern consoles could easily house the content and still do it justice. I also would like the game to house a battle mode that included secondary characters as fighters, this could open up the game’s online possibilities. Finally a co-op mode that allows players to team up during the story mode. Perhaps even enabling online for this as well which I thought would be awesome.

So how about it? A game with a huge story mode full of interesting characters and a deep battle system to keep players enticed. Hopefully anyone familiar with the source content agrees. Thanks for checking my ideas thus far out, shout if you wanna discuss 🙂
